Philosophy

Coty bought Philosophy in 2010 from Carlyle Group for a reported $1 billion. Philosophy makes skin care and other beauty products as well as fragrances. It was founded in 1996 by Cristina Carlino.

Cristina Carlino (born in 1961) founded Philosophy in 1996; she subsequently became an ubiqitous face on TV home-shopping network QVC before selling the business to private equity juggernaut Carlyle Group in 2007 for $475 million, though she retained a “significant equity holding” in the firm. Since then, Philosophy has been resold for $1 billion to cosmetics juggernaut Coty Inc., best-known for buying out 51% of Kylie Jenner’s brand in 2019. For her part, Carlino has since become an angel investor, doling out significant venture funding to startups like Paper Cosmetics.

These companies control almost every single beauty product you buy

As consumers, we like to think that we're making a conscious decision when we buy from a certain brand, especially when it comes to something as personal as beauty products.

But it turns out that 182 beauty companies fall under the massive umbrellas of  seven mega-companies — Estée Lauder Companies, L'Oréal, Unilever, Procter and Gamble, Shiseido, Johnson and Johnson, and Coty.

Coty names new CEO of Kylie Jenner beauty business

Coty has named Andrew Stanleick as the new CEO of its Kylie Jenner beauty business.

Stanleick, who is based in New York City, is a beauty and luxury goods veteran with over 20 years of experience. He joined Coty in 2017 after nearly five years at US luxury brand Coach, where he served as president and CEO for Coach Europe.

He will assume his new global responsibilities in addition to his current role as Coty executive vice president of the Americas.

Kris Jenner, who held the role of interim CEO, will remain closely involved in the strategic partnerships between Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin, KKW Beauty and Coty as a board member.
