Key ingredients

Containing 15% pure L-ascorbic acid and 1% alpha tocopherol (vitamin E), the addition of ferulic acid doubles the already synergistic benefits of our original high-potency formula, C+E, transforming C E Ferulic into a super-antioxidant combination.

The topical combination of vitamin C (15%), vitamin E (1%) and ferulic acid (0.5%) has been patented by SkinCeuticals corporation and is available as a commercial product from SkinCeuticals.com and many retailers.  If purchasing this product, make sure to check the expiration date and preferably store the product in a refrigerator tightly closed.

While the combination of vitamin C, E and ferulic acid appears to have clear advantages over vitamin C alone, a number of limitations remain. First, even though combining vitamin C with vitamin E and ferulic acid makes it more stable, some degradation still occurs and may still be a significant factor depending on the usage and storage conditions. Second, vitamin C is acidic and may be irritating for people with sensitive skin, especially at relatively high concentrations required for stimulating collagen production.

 

Melasyl

Melasyl is a molecule that helps improve the appearance of dark spots and discoloration caused by localized pigmentation issues. 

It's a multi-patented ingredient from La Roche-Posay that's available in La Roche Posay's Mela B3 franchise, including its MelaB3 serum and MelaB3 SPF30. L'Oréal Paris and Vichy will also follow in La Roche Posay's footsteps with future product launches that contain Melasyl.

Melasyl is designed to address pigmentation disorders that lead to age spots and post-acne marks, such as sunspots, vitiligo, and hyperpigmentation disorders. Melasyl is pronounced "MEH-luh-sil".

Melasyl was first presented at the World Congress of Dermatology 2023 in Singapore, alongside the first worldwide epidemiological study on pigmentary disorders. It has been featured at the American Academy of Dermatology's annual meeting in San Diego from March 8-12, 2024.

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic (ay-zeh-LAY-ick) Acid is effective in treating a number of skin conditions, such as acne, inflammation and hyperpigmentation. It is naturally present in the skin and is also found in other sources, including wheat, rye and barley.

Azelaic Acid is naturally antibacterial which makes it a great treatment for acne. When applied topically, it reduces the growth of bacteria in a follicle, helps to reduce inflammation and remove dead skin cells to prevent future acne breakouts. Azelaic Acid can be used on just about any skin type, including sensitive, as it has the ability to reduce inflammation. Anyone with rosacea, especially those with acne rosacea, will find it makes an excellent treatment for calming and soothing their inflamed skin.

Azelaic Acid is also fantastic in treating hyperpigmentation, such as post acne scarring and melasma, as it reduces melanin production. If you experience sensitivity to hydroquinone, Azelaic Acid is a good alternative.

Lastly, Azelaic Acid has shown that it may be useful as a hair growth stimulant.
